Turkey Day Baby... GIRL!

yep, we're the Egwuatus, the crazy family who revealed the gender of our 3rd baby via Facebook live.  this was originally Sonny's idea and even though i initially agreed when he presented it to me, i took it back a couple of days later!  there are so many "what ifs" surrounding labor and delivery and live video made me a bit anxious... but i eventually agreed though and we want to thank everyone who was able to tune in and share these special moments with us!!  in case you didn't catch the vids from FB (from Sonny's account), here are a billion pics and the actual gender reveal video which made for a very, very special Thanksgiving 2016.

 you know what they say... if you want to make God laugh, just tell Him your plans. my due date was 11/27, but i literally had stuff on my calendar up until the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and beyond.  i was determined to get it all done.

tuesday night, my boys teamed up and gave me a muuuuch needed foot massage. i had been cramping here and there that day while training my prenatal fitness girls and running errands.  they continued throughout the early morning on Wednesday and weren't painful at all, just noticeable and random with no particular pattern.  every time i got up to tinkle throughout the night, i felt them.  i went ahead and got up around 7ish because i couldn't go back to sleep.  my 39th week (and hopefully final) checkup appointment was happening later that afternoon, and i needed to get my Thanksgiving cooking done. #priorities LOL

two dump cakes and a gigantic pan of cornbread dressing!  this dressing recipe comes from my mom; it's not officially Thanksgiving until i smell it.Cheezer was out for Thanksgiving break so he excitedly came along with Dego and i to my appointment.

#CaptainObvious TIP: always bring snacks. always. i don't know what the heck i was thinking because i didn't bring nearly enough :-| ! they swallowed those graham crackers before my doc even came in and everything in that room became apart of their playground!!my OB checked me again for dilation and stated "1.5 cms!" as she snapped off her latex gloves.  i was thinking, "dang, that's it? ah well, anything can happen." she said i might see some blood using the restroom later, and she was spot on.  as i expected, my discomfort level increased post-appointment and those light cramps returned immediately.  i went ahead and canceled my trainings for the day because i wanted to be close to home should my contractions rev up. took my last preggo selfie when we got back home!  39 weeks and 3 days.  my mucus plug had been disintegrating for several days and this time the gloopy, clear discharge on the toilet paper was light pink instead. this was all too familiar!  i told Sonny that things were getting weird and that we should seriously finish packing and actually load up the truck.  he said alright, so we cleaned up the house a little in the process so it wouldn't be a complete wreck once we returned, lol.  

Thursday 11/24 

around 10:30 pm, the contractions became slightly painful yet manageable, and the wave would hit every 10 minutes or so. wherever i was in the house,  i would yell, "Contraction!" out to Sonny and he would hit the lap button on his phone's running timer.  from then until about 2:15am, i labored at home until we hit the 'every 5 minutes' mark.  through every painful contraction i did either one of the following: pace around the house while inhaling & exhaling deeply until the wave passed, circle/roll my hips on my yoga ball,  and i even drew and sat in a warm bath for a good while which helped big time.  i have been taking warm baths the entire pregnancy, so it was a familiar, soothing, relaxing place for me. heck, that experience even made me strongly consider a water birth next time! (wait, next time!?) i made sure to use the restroom constantly to keep my bladder empty.  just like menstrual cramps, having anything in my bladder magnifies the pain.

while in the bathtub, i had one of the strongest contractions yet.  i told myself that immediately after the wave finished we were heading to the hospital.  this is it. it's go time.  Sonny put our sleeping boys in the truck one by one and waited for me to come get in.  another contraction hit as i was about to get in the passenger seat, so i got back out and walked down to the end of the drive way breathing deeply as the contraction peaked and finally passed. i had about 3-4 contractions on the way to the hospital; Sonny drove to the L&D entrance and i hopped out and went right up to the 3rd floor solo.  after checking into triage around 2:40am, i changed into a hospital gown and laid down on the triage bed.  the triage nurse checked my progress and said, "you're at a 5." what? whoa!  i was excited to be halfway there in my mind but definitely couldn't show it on my face.  she then called the front desk to confirm i was indeed staying and prepared a wheelchair for me. i hopped in and had another contraction as she wheeled me right past Sonny and the boys sitting in the waiting room! Chiso had fallen back to sleep, but Dego was wide awake and the sight of me passing and not stopping upset him to tears. we arrived to the room, i quickly climbed into bed, and my nurse hooked me up to machines to the left and right of me.  the boys snacked on the graham crackers i packed while i contracted like crazy and waited for my epidural.  by this time i was 7 cms dilated.epi is IN. ice chips and smiles. i don't know how much time passed before my epi came...of course it felt like an eternity!  i'd estimate 30-45 minutes or so, though.  everyone had to leave the room except my nurse and the doc administering the epi once he arrived.  in less than 5 minutes or so, the pain disappeared completely.

so... my doctor would not be on-call until 7am that morning to deliver baby Kosi *insert sad face*.  Sonny and i were both OK with that though and figured we'd just hang out and wait.  no big deal.  the epi was kicking so it was all good on my end!

at about 4:45am, my nurse checked me again, pulled back hastily and said, "wow, you're at 10, hun, we gotta go."  they immediately contacted the on-call Dr. and he was on his way.

i motioned for Sonny to come to my bedside.  we quickly chatted and agreed that it didn't matter who delivered Kosi, but that he/we would make sure i had ample time to push while avoiding an episiotomy if at all possible.  we knew God was with us and we kept moving forward.

alright, time to puuuuuuuuush!1.5 pushes later at 5:10am, Kosi made her presence well known! she was yelling at the top of her lungs; my dad said he heard her clearly from the waiting area. "oh wow, Sonny, it's a girl!! mom! it's a girl!!" i remember crying and saying that over and over again in disbelief.  this was after i lifted her leg for confirmation though, LOL!  Chiso & Dego were quiet when they entered the world, but not this lil' lady.  check out the FB live vid here:

she's finally here, Chiso!  he wanted and prayed for a little sis so bad. my team. thank God for my team. Sonny has held one leg and my mom has held the other for all three pregnancies.mimicking her face :D

yeah, i didn't move for a good while!  she was all cleaned up and ready to eat.Kosi's very first nursing session... i can't even begin to explain how special and intimate skin to skin contact is for mama & baby.

uncle Thew arrived shortly after his very first niece did.my immediate family took the early morning shift, haha.Grannie got her girl :) even though i convinced myself early on that i was having a 3rd boy, my mom never stopped referring to Kosi as 'she' and 'her'. since walking the 5k Turkey Trot was now out of the question for me, Sonny headed over to the Galleria with Chiso so that he could run the kid's 1k!  his uncle made sure he was straight for the ladies first ;)after only 3 hours of sleep, he was ready to ROCK it!!!about to have pancakes with Papa at the VIP pre-race breakfast sponsored by IHOP. maaaaan i was looking forward to those pancakes. on the starting line...wide awake now! way to GO, Chiso!! a shiny, finisher medal and a new little sister in the same day. so much to be thankful for.gobble, gobble, you turkeys!

Sonny took Chiso to be with Dego and my parents, then headed back to the hospital. my ashiness was clearly the last thing on my mind! food was definitely at the top of my priority list though; i ordered breakfast as soon as they moved us over to the postpartum wing.taking it all in and thanking God for answered prayers.  i definitely prayed for a quick delivery and everything really did happen crazy fast.  i was prepared to rest a little since we had been up all night, but that's not how things work, haha!  someone came in every 3 minutes to either check on me, check on Kosi, run a test, deliver food, or give us some info or an update.  not complaining one bit; i appreciate the entire experience and protocols, the heaven-sent nurses and hospital staff, and expected / welcomed the knocks.  i knew the drill.

1st usie! i wouldn't be me if i didn't desire and attempt to reply to every single Instagram comment we received under this picture...man.  we are so appreciative of your LOVE.  thank you to each and every person who took the time to send us a social media message, comment, and DM.this was a great sign.  my appetite had been flaky since the 2nd trimester (as far as how much i could eat).  after just a few bites of something i was basically done.  if i went any further, i'd often feel physically sick.  haaaaated that feeling!  healthy smoothies were a big part of my 3rd trimester because of it.no crumb left behind!  i ate every single thing they brought me on those trays! food finally tasted like food again, just that quick.

 i needed every last one of those calories to prepare my body for nursing and get my milk going.more family came to visit that evening and brought us Thanksgiving food!!! are they related or what? love this brother & sister pic of Sonny & Michelle and her daughter Camille.Kosi is Nwachi's (my sweet Mother-In-Love) 4th grand girl! Papa got his girl!  i pray these two form a loving bond that lasts all the days of their lives.

day 2 view!waiting on my breakfast and watching Food Network.  the boys get dibs on the TV at home all the time so i took advantage and watched something i enjoy for a change!  i could watch Pioneer Woman aaaaall day. #SorryNotSorry, Sonny.  she's Chiso's twin, who is also my twin, which means Kosi looks just like me!  maybe next round, fam.later that afternoon we ventured out and walked a few laps around our hospital floor.   meanwhile, Dego and Chiso were having THE time of their lives playing with rocks and eating pancakes at Grannie & Grampa's house!we missed them SO much and could not wait to meet them at home with Kosi the next day.

having my usual breakfast and preparing for home.free!    homeward bound by the grace of God.we're hooooome! Chiso picked this wild flower for me while outside at my parents house and could not wait to hand deliver it.  it's the little things that get you, right?my brother and sis-n-love spent Thanksgiving in Arkansas but came over to see their new niece as soon as they got back into town.  give Kosi some time, Natalie, she'll be keeping up with you before we know it.

34 Week Checkup

20161019_121127-01i had every intention to get dolled up for today's appointment buuuut i ended up following Dego's lead.  we just want to be comfy.  lol.  we did wear pants though.  seriously, i plan to put more effort into my appearance these last few visits cause it makes me feel darn good when i take the time to do so.  i don't shy away from posting on social when i look a hot mess either though...i'm not ashamed of my reality on the other 5-6 days of the week.  i use the #RealityIG hashtag often cause perfection is not inspiring to me, authenticity is!20161019_124904-01 it's weekly appointment visits from here on out yall.  already!  (i say already like the time has been flying by this trimester, ha).   now is also around the time i get the, "your baby is gonna be so tiny!!" comments the most.  brang'em on!  i know most women mean well (although some directly imply that something is very wrong with me or baby :- | ) , so i always give them the benefit of the doubt.  i'm measuring 35 cms for week 34 according to my OB so all is well, praise be to God.  sometimes people either forget or can't tell from my pics that i'm 5' 10'', but height is only one of the maaaany factors that contribute to bump size. that's a whole nother blog post tho!  the night before my appointment i could totally feel something happening and i got super uncomfy again right before bed... this baby has flipped into a horizontal position again.  the nerve!! we've still got time to get it together though.  my last ultrasound happens on my next visit; can't wait.

Dego and i were pleasantly surprised during my visit; my Instagram Husband walked right through the door, smiling!   so naturally i put him to work, duuuuuh. img_20161019_140953now i'm gonna go do all the stuff i told my OB i haven't done yet when she asked. you know, re-registering for the hospital, packing my overnight bag, taking maternity pics, dusting off the newborn car seat, naming the baby, etc. mhmm. k. bye.

wait, i've known you for how long!? + 29 weeks

say hello to our little 29 week acorn squash-sized baby! i seriously wish i had done this week by week with the boys. heck, i'm in the grocery store often enough to make it happen.  they both now know what the heck acorn squash even is plus i love having hands-on fun with learning when food is involved. who doesn't!? 20160911_193400_001-01so guess what else went down during my 29th week of pregnancy!?  Mr. Egwuatu and i celebrated 9 years of marriage together!  meeting him on campus at UH back in 2000 happened yesterday.  yall hear me? yesterday *sobs uncontrollably* :( anyway,  around this time last year we were in Maui frolicking on the beach, but this year we stayed local for a change.  not only cause of the current zika threat, but cause of other current financial obligations, a new full-time kindergartener, and because Lord willing, we plan to do it BIG next year for #10 (and take that family Disney vaca before Dego turns 3...CAN NOT WAIT).  it's saving season for us.  so, we found some local things to do and enjoyed our special day together, just the two of us.

20160915_045059-01we <gasp> started with a 530am workout, whoop!  Sonny joined the #5amWorkoutClub for a day and was front and center for my Barbell Strength class.  he is clearly not one of us, haha.

20160915_083536-01 we took our time, laughed, joked, and enjoyed our lifting session together.  no rush whatsoever.  usually our boys are in the child center so we have to get it in before the time limit is up and the staff comes to hunt us down!  this was needed.

then we went home to.....REST! oh and clean up our house before hurricanes Chiso & Dego returned.

matchy, matchy!  we dined at Caracol for our anniversary dinner.  i have been wanting to try this place since my birthday this past April!  i was looking for a nice restaurant back then and one of my Lifetime Fitness class members suggested we go there.  weeell, Sonny had already made plans so this occasion was perfect for checking it out.  our taste buds were in HEAVEN! YUM!

  • i started with an unpictured salad (Lechugita Orejona)
  • we split the Taquitos Tronadores de Carnitas (top left)
  • Sonny ordered the biggest hunk of protein on the menu per our waiter (Bistec con Moras)
  • i finally stepped outside of my box and ordered the scrumptious  Callo de Hacha (bottom left)
  • we split the Piña Rostizada (and coulda used 2 more scoops of ice cream!)

20160915_212202-1then, it was on to sing and rap our faces off with P. Diddy at his Bad Boy Reunion Tour Concert!!! we don't do concerts often..in fact this was our very first one together! pregnancy narceolpsey didn't take me out and we were literally up and on our feet for most of the performances reminiscing and jamming.  great show!


remember this lil' lady!? photogrid_1475369014299 she was born on our anniversary last year and we met her via Skype while in Maui.  we are another year older and she is now one.  happiest of birthdays, baby Natalie!

happy 4th + 19 weeks

bell pepper baby status!

 1 week away from being halfway there!? man. seems like after the 1st tri passed time really took off.  i have SO much i want to get done and now that i feel like going hard again (k, not too hard!) and accomplishing some long-term goals with Fit Foodie Le, LLC that's what's on my agenda.

 i got up early before the house woke up to get in some cardio and yoga, but the yoga class started later than i expected, dang.  i can't walk past a dumbbell without picking it up sooooo,

i did a few moves from my prenatal workout plans including this one that targets your glutes, one at a time.  it also challenges your balance, which works your core!  try it with or without a dumbbell and remember:

  • keep your knee behind your toes at all times.

  • sink down into the heel of the leg you're working to really activate your glute and hamstring. 

  • keep a flat back during the entire move.  workout how you'd like to look. nobody wants to walk around with terrible posture, right!?  that always reminds me to fix my form. 

current 2nd tri woes:

numbness! 

most times i wake up these days, my hands, wrists, or even my entire arm(s) are numb and tingling and i have to lay there and wiggle my fingers like a mad woman until it goes away.  so annoying!  ever since Father's Day, i've felt way more fetal movement, my tummy is popping out a lil' bit more, my breasts are sore/swollen more often, and my areola have darkened.  growth spurt!  i read that the numbness has to do carpal tunnel syndrome from the swelling that compresses the nerves in my wrists.  it tends to get worse as the pregnancy progresses. great! lol.  i could probably cut back on my salt and up my water a bit more to help fight the swelling and that's what i plan to do.


DSC_0659-01for the 4th, i baked up some lemon pepper, Weber Garlic Sriracha, and BBQ sockeye salmon,DSC_0658-01and grilled up some colossal BBQ shrimp.

 we hit up HEB after church the day before and it was a maaad house!  sample stations every couple of feet and people everywhere getting ready to party.   both the salmon and shrimp were on sale for 7 bucks and some change per lb; what a sale!

Chiso and i had a lil' too much fun on snap chat during our samples shopping trip (add us! fitfoodiele):PhotoGrid_1467675345275my bump gets me extra samples, weeeeee20160703170204745that ice cream concluded our sample fest!  DSC_0687-01i also grilled up some corn and lean, ranch turkey sliders with homemade guac cause Chiso requested burgers with his fireworks!  i really wanted some baked beans but by the time i finished all that i was TOAST and ready to sit down.  in addition to meal prepping for our 6 Pack USA clients and my postpartum moms, i am learning how to seriously get IN and OUT of the kitchen quicker by the day.  shortcuts are everything when it comes to meal prep! else you could spend way more time than you need in the kitchen and i don't have any to spare.  don't give up on meal prep and stay consistent. it will soon become second nature to you. DSC_0698-01our brothers and sisters came over with their kids and all the little cousins had a blast eating brownies and dodging watching fireworks. good times!

when you're pooped and can't poop #PreggoProbs

i sat here and laughed at my post title for waaaay too long. but uhhh, fit friends, there is absolutely nothing funny about constipation, preggo or not.  it can be incredibly painful, draining, and helloooo hemorrhoids :( .  if you're pregnant and experiencing sickness on top of that, double whammy, right!?  what's going on? your pregnancy hormones (progesterone) weaken your bowel muscles making them sluggish and slow to do their job, and your expanding uterus is taking up the room your bowel would normally use to do its thing. it's a lot going on in there! what makes this process easier on you?  start with adding more fiber-rich foods to your diet, something you can totally control.  you don't want to go from 0 - 100 though as that could bring on bloating and gas;  you've got to pace yourself with fiber.  you can do it!  you need 25-35 grams of fiber daily, so quick, read these examples and tips of what you can eat to get you there.

  • 1 cup of raspberries = 8 g fiber

  • 1 cup split peas = 16g fiber

  • 1/2 cup lentils = 8g fiber

  • 1/2 cup black beans = 8g fiber 

  • 1 cup cooked sweet potato = 6g fiber

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats = 5g fiber

  • 1 medium artichoke = 10g fiber

  • 10oz of spinach = 8g fiber

  • 1 medium pear = 6g fiber

  • 1 cup sweet corn = 4g fiber

  • 1/2 cup shredded wheat cereal = 6 grams fiber

  • 3/4 cup bran flakes = 5g fiber

  • 1/2 cup of edamame = 9g fiber & 11g protein!

  • half an avocado = 5g fiber

  • 1 cup cooked broccoli = 5g fiber

  • 5 prunes = 3g fiber 

  • 1 medium apple = 4g fiber

DSC_0101-01 here's a fiber rich snack i've been enjoying lately!  i don't even want to chance belly bloat by eating dairy, so unsweetened cultured coconut milk has been my go-to instead of plain, greek yogurt. i top it with fresh, sweet summer berries and *bran flakes.  it's a plus that the berries are on sale around this time of year, and the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants present are wonderful for baby and i.DSC_0104-01there is always a hungry visitor lurking around my food shoots...always!DSC_0107-01no kisses, no fruit!! :)

4 more ways to keep things moving along:20160614_160133hydration. keep chugging water and don't let up.  it's no secret that i've never been great in this area but this pregnancy has given me no choice but to keep water bottles everywhere!  i wake up in the middle of the night sometimes craaaaazy thirsty. i fill up my tumbler above before heading to workout and i've started adding fruit to my sparkling water again; it helps.  upping my water keeps me running to the bathroom twice as much, but it's worth the sacrifice.  whatever i can do to escape constipation, i will.  down 8 full glasses per day, and more if needed if you're active and moving.  also, a little 100% prune juice in your sparkling water works as a great, mild laxative, as well as real prunes. IMG_20160614_074232keep moving.  regular exercise encourages regular bowel movements.  even a 10 minute walk counts; just do something, mamas.  prenatal yoga, step aerobics, water aerobics, zumba, spinning...just go!  if you're not moving around, chances are your system ain't either!  i'm currently 15 weeks and counting and feeling GREAT again, thank God.DSC_0871-01keep it clean.  your diet of course!  now, my 1st tri definitely wasn't the cleanest. most days started with a breakfast of eggs and toast, but everything after that? crackers, sparkling water, and a 5pm bed time.  i was just trying to get through the day without making my evening sickness worse or come faster and literally nothing sounded or looked appealing.  except Mexican food, haha.  do your best and realize the cleaner (low-no process foods) you eat though, the smoother your system will run. it's that simple. your 'plumbing' is already being reworked to house your baby; don't make it have to work so much harder.DSC_1155-01pace yourself.  not only should you eat slower, you should also eat more frequently.  at one point in my first trimester if i ate too little, i made myself sicker.  if i ate too much, i was completely miserable. you gotta get it just right but one thing you do not want to do is overeat.  as i stated above, the pregnancy hormones slow our digestive systems way down so it takes even longer for our food to travel on through.  i repeat, do not overeat!  overloading your system is not cool at a time like this! plus, if you're ingesting a ton of highly processed food at that? trust me on this one.  don't do it.  5 to 6 meals a day with plenty of water in between is your best bet, not 2 or 3 large ones.  remember, this too shall pass. :)  


 thank you for weighing in on some of your favorite Trader Joe's finds via Instagram recently! i find a new, cool, must have item every single time i go.  this mini haul we got:20160613_220012Tandoori Naan - i pay upwards of 3 dollars for 2 pieces of naan elsewhere but found 4 in a pack for 1.99 at TJ's! super STOKED about that!  my boys love them with cheese and turkey pepperoni on top. cooks right up in 8 minutes under the broiler (these come frozen so thaw them first).

Cookie Butter Ice Cream - this was aaaaaall Chiso (5) yall, lol!  instead of stopping by Chick-Fil-a like i planned for a single serving, a pint seemed like a better idea.  i told him to pick out a flavor and this is what he chose. that's my boy, hahahaha

Sunflower Seed Butter - ever tried it?  if your kids have nut allergies, then this, my friends, is their 'peanut' butter right here!  it's simply roasted sunflower seeds blended up until super smooth and creamy.  we are allergy free over here; we just love this stuff though. 

*Bran Flakes - i go to TJ's JUST for this cereal!  inside is exactly what you expect-- bran flakes. nothing more, nothing less. no bells or whistles needed. it has a pinch of sweetness and the crunchiness of the flakes paired with some cold, unsweetened vanilla almond milk? a 1st trimester woman's dream breakfast, lol. i used to eat it dry after first waking up to keep sickness at bay for a while and it helped a ton. 5g of fiber per 3/4 cup serving, remember!

Mac and Cheese - guys, i picked up the wrong box of mac and cheese!!! i meant to get their Reduced Guilt Mac and Cheese instead, whoops. next time, next time. anyway, Dego and i still killed this entire box in one sitting.  

Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk - a dairy-free staple in our home.  i enjoy this variety and Silk the most. 

Roasted Plantain Chips - what can i say... Grazers R US :P 

Q: keep it going! what other TJ's items are so awesome you have to tell somebody else about them?? i overheard a woman basically command and shout at her friend to, 'get the orange chicken!!!' while in the frozen foods aisle, ha.  it must be that good; have you tried it?
