Fall 2020 Kitchen Reno!
/welcome to our new kitchen, friends🤗.
we trusted our contractor and his team completely and they far exceeded our expectations. i’m going to highlight some of the features of our kitchen as you read through the post and i’ll link them so you can see just where to find them! thank you for your kind words and rejoicing with us! i’ve wanted to make tons of changes around here for a while now but was honestly waiting for the ‘perfect’ time… which just doesn’t exist.
let’s look back at the journey (which was really only about 6 days total). it felt longer because Murphy’s Law was in full effect, ha. the night before the workers were expected to arrive, Sonny and i were sitting in bed, working on our laptops. we heard somebody’s a/c unit (cause it definitely wasn’t ours) making loud, weird noises around 1am. Sonny finally realized that it was in fact our unit and went outside to check things out. by morning, our house was suuuper warm. this was in the middle of July in Texas, y’all!!! I felt so, so bad for the workers to have to do their thing inside a hot house. we got it taken care of later that same day; we were told a service guy would come anytime in between 11 and 5pm. naturally he arrived at like 4:06!! the kids and I were miserable so Sonny took us out for dinner that night. we couldn’t go sit down and relax somewhere though (#causeCOVID + pregnancy) so we drove around in the a/c for a good while as the house cooled back down.
since we had no running water in the kitchen and there was a layer of dust on pretty much everything, we ate out a few times, stopped by the grocery store and picked up a few rotisserie chickens + bagged salads some nights, and my MIL even ordered breakfast for us a few times (or i brought the toaster upstairs and did my best). Sonny said he would have loved to have sent us on a fun staycation but we made it work💪🏽.
not only is our 13th wedding anniversary approaching on sept. 15th, our 13th move-in anniversary is on September 26th! we had this home built as we prepared to wed back in 2007. i will never, ever forget our first night here. i missed my mom terribly and and i can’t remember if Sonny called her or i did…but i cried my face off to her on the phone that night lol. anyway, we hadn’t changed much over time cause honestly guys, i didn’t think we would be here for as long as we have been. changing careers and becoming a part time stay-at-home-mom put a dent in our financial plans (Sonny drew up a plan to pay our home off in a handful of years at the rate we were going), but home was where i knew i needed to be. i’m thankful for those years and the support of my family because i was able to be present and raise our children first and foremost. i’m seeing the fruits of my blogging labor after years of trial and error; and answered prayer i do not take for granted. these past few years though, I DID find myself taking our home for granted and not treating it like the blessing it has been. i kept telling myself i would just wait until we moved and really put effort into our next, larger home. that’s not the way life is supposed to be lived though. tomorrow is not promised.. and i told myself i would move forward in faith and stop waiting for the perfect time to do the things on my heart.
having dinner with the dust lol- we picked up chilis one night for dinner and i enjoyed sitting in the middle of the chaos and chatting with Sonny.
the kids were troopers through it all.
they were definitely involved in the process. i knew what i was looking for, but they helped us pick out several things, including the countertops. my favorite part of this transformation was watching the countertop installation😍.
countertops laid! they popped in our sink, and then came the primer for the cabinetry.
faucet installed, backsplash up, and a fresh coat of white paint was applied to the cabinets.
the cabinet doors were put back on and our water supply was connected again! we had a TON of dishes to wash cause of all the dust, so we put our sink and dishwasher(s) 👦🏽👦🏽 to use immediately.
as soon as i laid eyes on these pendant lights i knew they would be perfect.
since we shifted from black-brown to all things gray and white, we painted our expandable dining room table (got it from Ikea back in 2007). I didn’t want to part with it cause we need a long table for our family of 6.
we snagged some bar stools Sonny and i both agreed on from At Home, and the kids love to sit on them and eat at the expanded bar.
my mom has a white farmhouse sink that i fell in love with, so i was looking for something similar. Sonny thought that whatever sink we chose would match way better if it were stainless steel like the rest of our appliances. he was right (this time😜). i’m extremely satisfied with our sink and we easily fill this thing up with dishes in this house, ha.
our previous dish drying rack no longer matched and was starting to rust, so Sonny ordered this two tier one.
the sink faucet we chose has a 2 function spray head and is corrosion and tarnish resistant.
the backsplash is from Floor & Decor. only took me about 3 minutes to find!
i am incredibly happy with the way things turned out! the bushed nickel cabinet handles arrived just in time for the contractors to put them on. else, Sonny would have done it himself.
we also updated the living and dining room floors (click here for that complete room transformation!); Sonny threw the flooring in to my surprise and i did not argue.
we upgraded our fireplace and replaced it with shiplap and a wooden mantle.
eating dinner from subway on the floor. good times!
this was the very first thing i baked in the new kitchen: almond flour chocolate chip banana bread.
Sonny dusted and cleaned everything off one last time so i could take these pictures for Instagram😀.
we are beyond grateful to God for a facelift for my 2nd bedroom 🙌🏽!
